Obergefell v. Hodges

When I was a funny little closeted gay boy in rural Vermont, I never imagined that two men could fall in love and marry each other. In fact, when I was an openly queer man in my earlier 20’s I thought it was even more impossible. Then I fell in love with a handsome boy from Utah and despite its heteronormative trappings, we wanted to get married. Weirdly at the same time, the majority of the United States (not just Vermont, Massachusetts, DC, and Iowa) urged on by the Obama Administration decided to support gay marriage. To document this shift I started coloring in the stars in this Rainbow American flag I’d bought from Long Beach Pride with pink for each state that legalized gay marriage.  On June 26, 2015 (almost a year after I was married in California) a 5-4 decision in the Supreme Court Case Obergefell v. Hodges made Gay Marriage the law of the land.
