Woven Compositions

Untitled: Material Frequency Weaving, 2018 – Weavings created at the March 30th, 2018 event Untitled: Material Frequency at the Denver Art Museum. These pieces were created using a backstrap loom produced in collaboration with creative engineers at Boulder Public Library’s makerspace, BLDG 61. Friends of artist worked with the public using upcycled t-shirt yarn made from shirts salvaged from the Goodwill Outlet in Denver. – In addition to public weaving workshops, the evening also featured installations, performances, and readings by area artists. This collaboration was undertaken by hundreds of museum patrons, Lauren Hegge, Janet Hollingsworth, Kathy Ryan, Robert Holab, Emily Platzer, The Nightshift, Debora Bernagozzi, Jason Bernagozzi, Adán De La Garza, Ryan Wade Ruehlen, Gina Adams, Abby Krause, Caleb Covel, Craftsman and Apprentice of Denver and Jodie Gorochow. This project was made possible with support from the Denver Art Museum and Denver Area Toyota Dealerships.

I Was a Terrible Boy Scout, So I Joined 4H, 2018 – Made with acrylic yarn and inspired by the county fair. This woven composition is about how the privileges of men are not always extended to funny little queer boys. Queer boys like Frost who couldn’t hang in boy scouts. Instead, many of them joined 4H a national organization that teaches young people to make crafts, grow gardens, and raise livestock. In 4H he became close to 2 other queer kids from his town of 700 and 30 years later they still hang out.

Time to Make Some New Friends, 2018 – Acrylic & wool yarn, sequins, cotton, and reflective tape from Haystack School of Craft.

Flamboyant Lee, 2018 – Cotton thread, tool dip, mini-disco balls, acrylic & wool yarn, and fleece.

Trap Weaving, 2018 – Acrylic yard remnants at Haystack Mountain School of Craft, acrylic yarn from Joann’s, and lobster trap rope from the Deer Isle, ME dump.

I Can’t Even, A Pet Peeve Cemetary, 2017/2018 (Materials from Jan 6, 2017 Performance at Basement Projects in Santa Ana, CA)

I Am Catwoman, Hear me Roar (Collective Weaving), 2018 – T-shirts salvaged from the Goodwill in Denver Colorado and woven with the help of patrons at the Denver Art Museum. At the conclusion of a night of events of curated by the artist for the Denver Art Museum, Frost gave a lecture that discussed his influences and how weaving can be a metaphor for communities working together. In a revival-like moment, the audience was asked to sing along to “I Had the Time of My Life” (from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack) and come on stage to weave with the artist.

Pink Progression, 2018 – Leftover yarn, and fleece from the January 21st, 2017 Woman’s March in Denver. Frost is part of collective of artists in Denver, CO, and inspired by the triumph/faults of the Woman’s March. Together they produced a series of exhibitions as a response. These exhibitions were curated by Anna Kaye and were held at the Boulder Public Library, Denver Public Library, and Center for Visual Art in Denver. While this piece never was in one the shows, it may appear in future iterations.

Diamond Prince Weaving (Portrait of Liberace 2), 2017 (Acrylic yarn, pink ribbon, dowel from American Flag, and strung plastic pearls.)

Too Much?, 2017 – Made with hand-dyed wool yarn, strung sequins, paracord, wooden dowel, and real tree duct tape. This piece is about the artist’s move from LA to Colorado and not trying to pass as straight in public spaces.

Having a Cocktail in the Garden with Aunt Helen and Alice (1967) 1, 2017 – This woven composition was based on an image of a chair in the artist’s great Aunt Helen and her partner Alice’s yard. The weft includes shirts that belonged to him and his husband. The material and design of this piece reflect the generations of queer people who worked hard for the rights that we enjoy every day.
