The Loom as Journal: Studies in Texture and Time
The Loom as Journal: Studies in Texture and Time (2016-PRESENT)
Since 2016, I used a small, portable loom as a weaving journal. Designed to match the dimensions of my sketchbook and inspired by Marianne Fairbanks and Sheila Hicks, this loom allowed me to create woven studies wherever I was. It stayed in my bag, offering a way to reflect, experiment, and engage material processes outside of the studio.
The works in this exhibition included 120 woven studies that operated as sketches and prototypes. They documented an ongoing practice of testing structure, color, and texture, where play and technique were closely intertwined.
During a residency at Boulder Public Library’s STUDIO 24, I developed workshops around this loom and journaling practice, created a zine, and shared my approaches to weaving as a reflective, portable method.
For its inaugural exhibition from February to May 2025, Top Hat Supply presented The Loom as Journal: Studies in Texture and Time, pairing these journals with larger works developed on tapestry and floor looms. The exhibition revealed how small-scale experiments translated into expanded compositions, maintaining the same spirit of curiosity and material exploration.
